In clinical work, we encourage our clients to examine internal and external factors that may be contributing to their decision-making, distress, or reasons for seeking therapy. As professionals, we must hold ourselves accountable to the same standard of awareness—able to recognize drivers that may be affecting how we support our clients, supervisees, and employees. Achieving this level of awareness requires us to recognize and identify our values, implicit and explicit bias, and cultural context. Every service we offer initiates with some form of self-assessment, laying the reliable groundwork for professional and ethical success.
